Preschool (3-5 Years Old)

If your child is 3-5 years of age, the should have already had their first dental appointment with a pediatric dentist (if they haven’t, you can schedule one for your child right here on our website).

As your child moves out of the baby and toddler stage and turns into a rapidly growing little boy or girl right before your eyes (and gain more and more independence each day), it’s important that you keep a close eye on their oral health.

The eruption of their permanent “adult” teeth

It’s possible for a 4 or 5 year old to lose their first tooth naturally and have their first permanent tooth erupt. When this is happening, it’s important to see a pediatric dentist to ensure that everything looks good and the tooth is coming in as it should be.

Keeping an eye on their diet and oral hygiene (to help prevent cavities)

Sadly, it’s not uncommon for children as young as 3-5 years of age to develop cavities (also called caries). In most cases, this is due to a diet that is too high in sugar combined with inadequate oral hygiene.

Remember, it’s important that you limit the amount of sugary foods and beverages that your child consumes, and it’s imperative that their teeth and gums are thoroughly cleaned before going to bed.

While it’s common for children to want to “do it themselves” at this age, you should still supervise your child in the mornings and before bedtime when they are brushing their teeth!

A dental emergency is not only possible…it’s likely

At 3-5 years of age, children are “wide open” as they say and are constantly getting their hands into everything. It’s not uncommon for a child this age to have an accident that could cause them to lose a tooth or experience some form of dental trauma.

While we encourage you to call our practice if this happens, your best course of action may be to visit your local emergency room so that your child can be seen immediately and get the treatment they need.
